Nas nossas frases, o segundo sintagma nominal (o pássaro) tem aparentemente duas possibilidades de encaixe na representação sintática: objeto do verbo da oração subordinada temporal (fotografar) ou sujeito do verbo da oração principal (chilrear). Diferentes estudos têm verificado que frases idênticas à apresentada são difíceis de processar, atribuindo essas dificuldades ao facto de os leitores tenderem a inserir inicialmente o SN como objeto do verbo que o precede. Contudo, para a construção de uma estrutura gramatical da frase ambígua, deveriam inseri-lo como sujeito do verbo seguinte. Esses estudos têm ainda verificado que a interpretação gerada a partir da primeira análise sintática, em que o SN é objeto, tende a persistir na memória, afetando a interpretação final das frases ambíguas. Para investigarmos o impacto da ambiguidade sintática temporária no processamento e na interpretação final das frases, construímos uma experiência com recurso ao paradigma de eyetracking. Os participantes leram frases em duas condições, ambígua (sem vírgula depois do primeiro verbo – fotografava o pássaro) e não-ambígua (com vírgula depois do primeiro verbo – fotografava, o pássaro), e de seguida responderam a perguntas de compreensão (para a frase apresentada, o repórter fotografava o pássaro? ou o pássaro chilreava na árvore?). Os nossos resultados demonstraram, desde início, um padrão de leitura distinto nas duas condições, que se intensifica com o tempo. Na frase ambígua, ocorrem várias regressões e há um acumular de tempos de leitura, comportamento que não se verifica na frase não-ambígua. Os resultados parecem assim sugerir dificuldade na resolução da estrutura ambígua, comportamento esperado quando há comprometimento com uma única estruturação sintática: SN como objeto do verbo da oração subordinada (teoria garden-path). A elevada taxa de acerto das respostas a ambas as perguntas de compreensão sugere contudo que, regra geral, não há impacto da ambiguidade na interpretação final das frases: eventuais problemas iniciais de estruturação e de interpretação terão sido resolvidos na reanálise. ; In the present work, we examined the eye movements of European Portuguese native speakers during the silent reading of sentences that contain temporary syntactic ambiguity, garden-path sentences, such as While the reporter photographed the bird chirped in the tree. In our sentences, the second noun phrase (the bird) can apparently be attached to the syntactic representation as the object of the subordinate verb (photograph) or the subject of the matrix clause verb (chirp). Different studies have found that sentences similar to the one presented above are difficult to process because readers tend to initially attach the NP as the object of the preceding verb. Instead, they should attach it as the subject of the following verb, which is the only syntactic analysis that allows the construction of a grammatical structure for the ambiguous sentence. The same studies have also found that the interpretation yielded by the first syntactic analysis, where the NP is an object, tends to persist in memory and affects the final interpretation of the ambiguous sentences. To investigate the impact of the temporary syntactic ambiguity on the processing and on the final interpretation of the sentences, we built an experiment using the eye tracking paradigm. Participants read sentences in two conditions, ambiguous (with no comma after the first verb – photographed the bird) and unambiguous (with a comma after the first verb – photographed, the bird). They then answered comprehension questions (for the sentence above, did the reporter photograph the bird? or did the bird chirp in the tree?). Our results showed, from the beginning, a distinct reading pattern in both conditions, which increases in difference over time. In the ambiguous sentence, there are several regressions and there is an accumulation of reading times. This pattern does not occur in the unambiguous sentence. Our results thus seem to suggest difficulty in resolving the ambiguous structure, an expected behaviour when there is a commitment to only one syntactic analysis: NP as the object of the subordinate verb (garden-path theory). The high accuracy rate of the answers to both comprehension questions suggests however that, in general, there is no impact of ambiguity on the final interpretation of the sentences. Any initial problems of structuring and interpretation will have been resolved during reanalysis.
