Abstract:
The Covid-19 pandemic has triggered an unprecedented coining of new words, many of which have been included in the general language dictionary Le Petit Larousse illustré. We will focus our study on the ways in which the dictionary has coped with this influx, paying close attention to one of the specific aspects of this neology, i.e. the way words shift from language of special purposes to language of general purposes and how the two of them overlap. It turns out that the interplay between public health, politics and society has created a vocabulary shared by both specialists and non-specialists. Le Petit Larousse illustré 2022 gives an insight into what could be considered the trade-mark of this lexical evolution and illustrates the transformation of the speakers’ attitude towards the language they have in common.
