Abstract: The taboo against saying the name of recently deceased member of a community is reported from every continent. In central Australia it extends to the avoidance of any similar sounding word. The paper surveys the avoidance strategies used in central Australia, particularly among the Warlpiri, and considers a particular replacement word (kumunjayi) and its status as a name. ; NSF grant BNS-7913950
