Spelling while writing texts

Abstract:
International audience ; French is an especially relevant orthographic system for examining the processes involved in spelling. It is an irregular system with both many lexical pitfalls and a grammatical morphology which is in large part silent (Jaffré & Fayol, 2005). Thus, studying spelling in French reveals more about the dimensions involved in spelling than more transparent orthographies. We examined the extent to which individual variables (grade level, performance level and gender) and textual variables (text type and locus in the text) influence text length, frequency and type of spelling errors. The youngest participants, especially those evaluated by their teachers as having difficulty in oral or written expression, produced shorter texts and made many spelling errors. Phonographic errors were observed more in the beginning rather than at the end of texts, with girls producing the most. More morphological errors were found in the narrative texts than the expository texts and at the end of the texts rather than the beginning. ; Le français est un système orthographique particulièrement pertinent pour évaluer les processus impliqués dans l’orthographe. En effet, c’est un système irrégulier avec à la fois de nombreux pièges lexicaux et une morphologie grammaticale en grande partie silencieuse (Jaffré et Fayol, 2005). Ainsi, étudier l’orthographe en français est plus informatif concernant les dimensions impliquées par rapport à des langues plus transparentes.Notre objectif était d’examiner dans quelle mesure des variables individuelles (niveau scolaire, niveau de performance et sexe) et des variables textuelles (type de texte et locus dans le texte) influencent la longueur du texte, la fréquence et le type d’erreurs orthographiques.Les participants les plus jeunes, en particulier ceux évalués par leurs enseignants comme ayant des difficultés d’expression orale ou écrite, ont produit des textes plus courts et davantage d’erreurs d’orthographe. Les erreurs phonographiques étaient plus fréquentes au début des textes qu’à la fin, et chez les filles par rapport aux garçons. Quant aux erreurs morphologiques, elles étaient, à l’inverse, plus nombreuses à la fin des textes qu’au début, et dans les textes narratifs par rapport aux textes descriptifs.
