Linguistic habitus and identity in flux
|

Abstract:
Unsere global(isierend)e Welt befindet sich durch ein rasantes Wachstum von globaler Mobilität und technologischem Fortschritt im Umbruch. Ein wesentliches Merkmal dieser Veränderungen ist der Gebrauch von Englisch als Lingua Franca (ELF), deren Anzahl an ‚non-native speakers‘ die der ‚native speakers‘ längst überstiegen hat. Als hybride kommunikative Ressource ist ELF an keine lingua-kulturellen Bezugspunkte gebunden, sodass der dynamische Gebrauch von ELF Formen enthält, die nicht mit sprachlichen Regeln übereinstimmen. Dennoch wird ELF-Variation, wahrscheinlich aufgrund der weitgehend ideologisch motivierten Verhängung, Einimpfung und Naturalisierung der prestigeträchtigen Standardvarietät, tendenziell ausschließlich auf der Grundlage von Standardnormen bewertet, obwohl sich die Bedingungen der ELF-Kommunikation stark von denen einer gebundenen Varietät unterscheiden. Dies spiegelt sich auch in empirischen Untersuchungen wider, die zeigen, dass Einstellungen zu nicht standardmäßigem Sprachgebrauch eher negativ und oft außergewöhnlich ambivalent und widersprüchlich sind. Während ELF-NutzerInnen oft die effektive und erfolgreiche von solchen Normen unabhängige Dynamik der ELF-Variation erkennen, ist die Bindung an Normen dennoch stark. Trotzdem ist die Erforschung dieser Ambivalenz rar und weitgehend oberflächlich., weshalb die vorliegende Arbeit darauf abzielte, tiefere Einblicke in die Bildung solch widersprüchlicher Einstellungen zu geben. Zu diesem Zweck wurden theoretische Grundlagen, basierend auf ELF sowie Fragen der Postmoderne und sozio-kultureller Identität, mit einer eingehenden Lektüre von Bourdieus Language and Symbolic Power kombiniert, um schließlich einen konzeptionellen Rahmen zu entwickeln, der als Modell zur Erklärung dieses Phänomens dienen soll. So konnte ein sich gegenseitig prägendes und reproduzierendes Verhältnis zwischen psychologischen, ideologischen und externen Faktoren, wie Bildung oder ‚Torwächter‘, und der Legitimität bestimmter sprachlicher Normen gezeigt werden, obwohl die flexible sprachlichen Realität der ELF-Nutzung durchaus in Studien auch anerkannt wird. Daher werden die ‚Ökonomie‘ und damit das ‚covert prestige‘ der ELF-Nutzung verflüssigt und sind somit schwerer zu antizipieren. So stellt ELF, gemeinsam mit Globalisierung und der Postmoderne, eine Herausforderung für unseren linguistischen Habitus dar, der tief verwurzelte, eher traditionelle Annahmen von Kommunikation und Gemeinschaft beinhaltet. Diese Konflikte lassen sich schließlich in Form von ambivalenten Einstellungen gegenüber ELF-Variation beobachten. ; Our global(ising) world is undergoing significant changes through ever-growing mobility and technological advances. English as a Lingua Franca (ELF), whose non-native users have long outnumbered its native-speakers, is at the forefront of such changes. As a hybrid global means of communication, it is not bound to any specific lingua-cultural refence points, with its linguistic reality including forms that diverge from a set of linguistic rules. Nonetheless, most likely owing to the largely ideologically motivated imposition, inculcation and naturalisation of the prestigious standard variety, the use of ELF tends to be evaluated exclusively on the basis of standard norms, despite the conditions of its usage contrasting strongly from those of bounded varieties. This is also reflected by empirical research suggesting that attitudes towards ELF variation tend to be rather negative and often oddly ambivalent and self-contradictory. Thus, while users often recognise the legitimacy of different degrees of conformity in ELF variation, there remains to be a deeply entrenched attachment to native speaker or standard English norms. Notwithstanding, research into this ambivalence is scarce and largely superficial. Therefore, the present thesis aimed to provide deeper insights into the formation of such conflicting attitudes. To this end, theoretical groundwork, based not only on ELF, but also largely on issues of postmodernity and socio-cultural identity, has been combined with a close reading of Bourdieu’s Language and Symbolic Power in order to eventually come up with a conceptual framework serving as an explanatory model of such ‘linguistic schizophrenia’. This aimed to get a deeper understanding of how combined effects of psychological predispositions, ideological backdrops and external factors, such as education or gatekeeping, both are shaped by and shape and thereby reproduce the legitimacy of standard norms in the users’ minds, which is, however, conflicting with the widely acknowledged success of fluid ELF variation that does not always adhere to certain norms. Hence, the ‘economics’ and therefore the covert prestige of ELF as a global tool for highly diverse contexts of intercultural communication are liquefied and thereby harder to anticipate. Thus, ELF, along with globalisation and postmodernity, is challenging and colliding with our linguistic habitus, which entails deeply entrenched, rather traditional assumptions of communication and community, which may eventually surface via ambivalent attitudes towards non-conformity.
