Failure of Speech Production Mechanism in Lexical Choice
Г.; Ovchinnikova, I. G..
Abstract: Lexical substitutions in poem recitation, conversations, and Internet communication are considered an evidence of a failure of a speech production mechanism. Lexical mischoices and slips-of-the-tongue of Russian native speakers including a patient who suffered Alzheimer’s disease (AD) were classified based on their similarity to the target word and to the context. Lexical substitutions in conversations and Internet communication show semantic and associative similarity to the target word, while the substitutions in poems recited by the AD patient manifest mostly associations and phonetic similarity to the target word; the current context often gives natural priming for a substitution in a recited poem. Different categories of substitutions reveal failures of apperception, anticipation, inhibitory control, categorization, and other mechanisms involved into speech production.
