Abstract: Creativity is one of human’s distinctive competences. The levels of creativity may however differ from one person to another. Among popular individual creativity theories is Mednick’s (1962) model of individual differences in associative hierarchies that focuses on the trait-based variation of creativity. According to Mednick (1962), creativity is structurally extracted from the connections between concepts in one’s semantic network. The level of creativity and associative fluency are thus dependent upon the strengths of these connections. On the one hand, less creative people tend to possess a steep associative hierarchy in their semantic networks, and in turn create a narrow search capacity. Highly creative people, on the other hand, whose semantic networks display a flat associative hierarchy, are able to form a much larger radius of search space, activating not only close but also moderate and weak associations of different concepts as well.
