La déflexivité, du latin aux langues romanes : quels mécanismes systémiques sous-tendent cette évolution ?

Abstract:
Plusieurs phénomènes concernant l’évolution du latin aux langues romanes – et, plus largement, de l’indo-européen aux langues romanes – reçoivent une nouvelle interprétation lorsqu’ils sont observés sous l’angle de la déflexivité. En élargissant la conception de la déflexivité proposée par la psychomécanique du langage, les auteurs analysent des cas de déflexivité régressive, par antéposition de particules (articles, pronoms, diminutifs et augmentatifs, particule de gérondif, futur analytique, particules de subordination) et des cas de déflexivité progressive, par post-position (négation française et des dialectes de l’Italie du nord, complément de nom, place des subordonnées relatives et conjonctives). Ils s’interrogent sur les causes d’une restructuration aussi vaste et aussi diversifiée. Ils montrent qu’elle est liée au changement de catégorie typologique des langues : on est passé d’une langue agglutinante (l’indo-européen) à une langue flexionnelle (le latin), puis à des langues de plus en plus proches du type isolant (les langues romanes). L’élément moteur de toute cette évolution est à voir dans le déplacement syntaxique du verbe qui, de la position finale dans la phrase propre aux langues agglutinantes, s’est anticipé et a ainsi ouvert la voie à la phrase complexe pluri-propositionnelle. ; Deflexivity, from Latin to Romance languages : on the systemic mechanisms driving this evolution Several mechanisms concerning the evolution from Latin to Romance languages – and, more generally, from Indo-European to Romance languages– receive a new interpretation once they are scrutinized in the light of deflexivity. On the basis of an enlargement of the notion of deflexivity such as it was originally elaborated in the frame of guillaumean psychomechanics, the authors analyze some instances of regressive deflexivity, such as the forefronting of particles (articles, pronouns, diminutives and augmentatives, subordination particles) and of progressive deflexivity by post-position (negation in French and in the dialects of northern Italy ; complement of the noun ; position of adjectival and nominal clauses). They investigate into the causes of such a sizeable and diversified restructuring, and show that it is driven by a change of typological category affecting the languages, from the agglutinative type (Indo-European) through the flectional type (Latin) to types that are increasingly similar to the isolating one (Romance languages). The key element originating this evolution is the syntactic displacement of the verb, which leaves the final position characterizing agglutinative languages and is forefronted, paving the way for complex, multi-propositional sentences.
