Uwen, God'sgift Ogban. - : figshare, 2022 Abstract: This paper attempts to examine the application of politeness strategies during interpersonal conversations in English between lawyers and clients in the context of their formal and social interactional roles as participants in selected law firms using Calabar in Cross River State as a case study. Collection of data used for this study was through observation, audio-tape recording and note?taking. The theoretical framework adopted for this study is Brown and Levinson's Politeness Theory. The theory is relevant as it is relied upon for the assessment of politeness schemes applied in the interactional encounters of the interlocutors which form the basis for the analysis. The findings reveal that the participants apply different strategies depending on the situationally-conditioned factors and social roles. Specifically, lawyers were observed to have predominantly used negative politeness strategies such as formal speech style, ambiguous expressions and other face threatening acts to highlight, control and ...
