Abstract:
Previous research has focused on investigating how the multiple senses of ambiguous words are processed and represented in the mental lexicon (e.g., Atchley & Kwasny, 2003; Swaab, Brown, & Hagoort, 2003; Titone & Salisbury, 2004). These studies have used electroencephalography (EEG), measuring event-related potentials (ERPs) and focusing mainly on homonymy. Most current theories on polysemy do not adequately account for polysemous denominal verbs and their processing. We would expect the N400 and P600 effects to reveal important insights into the processing of polysemous cross-categorial words such as denominal verbs. Therefore, the main aim of the current study is to investigate the neurological processing of denominal verbs. Additionally, we will explore the relationship between non-verbal cognitive flexibility and the processing of polysemous denominal verbs. ...
