Abstract: В статье представлен ретроспективный анализ проблемы оценки способностей к иностранному языку. Обозначены мотивы и предпосылки возникновения интереса к рассматриваемой проблеме. Приводятся исходные способы прогностирования успеваемости по иностранному языку. Анализируются классификации факторов, входящих в понятие способности к иностранным языкам, и эволюция системы тестов для определения лингвистических способностей. ... : The article presents a retrospective analysis of the problem of the assessment of foreign language abilities. Motives and prerequisites for interest in the considered problem are specified. Grades in the native language, tests to determine the general development, special language tests are singled out as initial ways for prognostication of progress in a foreign language. Classifications of factors included in the concept of foreign language ability are considered, in particular: phonetic coding, learning of grammatical phenomena, mechanical memorization of material in a foreign language, independent orientation in new language material. Evolution of test system to determine linguistic abilities is analyzed. It is appropriate to define language ability according to the time required for a student to achieve certain results with maximum dedication and quality training. Need for students’ selection based on language abilities is contingent only on limited time for training. ...
