Abstract: This is a report on experimental analyses of various texts connected to teaching English to speakers of other languages (TESOL), especially writing produced by learners, using Colin Martindale’s regressive imagery dictionary (RID). Word frequency lists, native contra learner argumentative, narrative, and dream reports, and stories written under relaxed as opposed to test conditions are analyzed. Martindale sought to investigate creativity in literature, these analyses point at some surprising insights into the nature of English usage, underlying differences between native versus learner text-type production, affect, and creativity. Results suggest skills which might be prioritized to get the most out of course time spent on creative writing: creative use of language, descriptive writing, L2 self-development, and empathy appear to be significantly more strongly related to better creative writing than some traditional lesson aims like grammatical accuracy, breadth of vocabulary, overall linguistic competence, ...
