Abstract:
; The aim of this thesis is to analyze the usage of anti-discriminatory gender-neutral language in Swedish and Austrian language guidelines between 2005 and 2016 and to point out linked discourses in those two states. The data comprises the content of four language guidelines, which are authorized and published by the states. Two of them were published by the Language Council of Sweden in 2005 and 2016. The other two are guidelines by the government of Lower Austria in 2016 as well as by the Austrian Federal Ministry of Education and Women in 2015. The analysis includes the categorization of language recommendations in the texts, the comparison of anti-discriminatory language from academic literature and queer_feminist resources, the detection of discourses from the textual material as well as the contextualization on a sociocultural level. The base of this thesis is a pragmatic, constructivist understanding of language and gender. The central research interest is the progress of the language recommendations of the states in this specific period of time as well as the ideas and concepts of gender and language activism shown in the guidelines. In this thesis, language activism is understood as an activist action to achieve a strategic change in language. The analysis also investigates five factors which determine the potential of the recommended language forms to be integrated in everyday language with a discourse-analytic, contrastive and interdisciplinary approach. To point out the background and processes of language change, this master thesis examines historic and grammatical developments, power effects of language as well as emotionality and criticism in relation to feminist language interventions. The results show that attitudes towards anti-discriminatory language have continued to develop positively in Sweden over the given period and that openness to the gender-neutral pronoun hen is clearly increasing. The Swedish strategy of neutralization of gendered language becomes very clear, as well as the positive effects of it. The analysis shows that mainly five factors were responsible for the success of the pronoun and gender-neutral language in Sweden. Austria and the German language chose the way of increasing visibility (of women*) in language, which makes the establishment of gender-neutral linguistic forms more difficult. The results of the analysis also show that the binary concepts of gender as well as the recommended binary language forms in the Austrian guidelines hardly changed at all in the period from 2006 to 2015 and that neutral forms – compared to Sweden – are significantly more difficult to establish. Finally, it is discussed which potentials lie in the different strategies and what it will take to further promote anti-discriminatory language.
