Abstract:
La poésie de Countee Cullen (1903-1946) – le poète le plus conservateur de la Renaissance de Harlem – révèle constamment un écart entre une préoccupation militante pour la « cause noire » et un usage revendiqué des formes et du langage poétiques britanniques du xixe siècle. Même s’il se préoccupe du sort de « son » peuple, Cullen refuse d’être considéré comme un poète « noir » et choisit un idiome et des cadres formels très éloignés de ceux qui sont défendus par les partisans d’une nationalisation de la culture américaine à la même époque. Il n’y a donc aucune revendication identitaire chez lui et dès lors aucune revendication d’une forme afro-américaine en tant que telle, même si ses préoccupations sont essentiellement raciales. Ce paradoxe l’a éloigné de la majorité des lecteurs noirs. ; The poetry of Countee Cullen (1903-1946) – the most conservative poet of the Harlem Renaissance – constantly reveals a gap between a militant concern for the « black cause » and a deliberate use of 19th-century British poetic forms and language. Even if he is concerned with the fate of « his » people, Cullen refuses to be considered a « black » poet and chooses an idiom and formal frameworks far removed from those defended by the advocates of a nationalization of American culture at the same period. There is thus no claim to identity on his part and therefore no claim to an African-American form as such, even if his concerns are overwhelmingly racial. This paradox estranged him the majority of black readers.
