La structure [Verbe + démonstratif + complétive] chez Thucydide et Xénophon

Abstract: International audience ; This article aims to clarify under which circumstances a certain type of cataphoric structure arises in Classical Greek, namely that which displays a complement clause linked to a demonstrative pronoun that depends on a verb of propositional attitude (verbs selecting for subordinates). Using statistics and examining its syntactic distribution, we track down the parameters that are relevant to account for this phenomenon and the variety it features. The author, the semantic class of the embedding verb, the type of subordinate clause and the type of demonstrative have no effect on the phenomenon. Conversely, the usage of singular and simple forms of demonstratives, and the placement in focus position are relevant. Hence we argue that the structure [Verb + demonstrative + complement clause] is a way to manifest the focalization of the subordinate, a semantically vacuous role that does not necessitate a complex pronominal form.
