Abstract:
Motivada por questões culturais, históricas, etimológicas,etc., a linguagem figurada perde a associação com seus referentes originais e ganha novo sentido conformeo contexto. Mais do que uma estratégia restrita à literatura e à publicidade, a idiomaticidade é determinante para a comunicação eficiente e permeia todos os gêneros textuais. Por fazerem associações distintas, diferentes línguas e culturas raramente compartilham metáforas similares. O objetivo deste artigoé descrever uma tarefa aplicada a tradutores em formação, de curso bacharelado, para a busca de equivalentes funcionais em língua inglesa de metáforas utilizando frutas em português brasileiro. Apesar de os botanomorfismosserem recorrentes nas duas línguas, interlinguisticamente, a relaçãoentre a fruta e seu referente raramentese dá da mesma forma. Utilizando como exemplo a metáfora (ser um) laranja, descrevemos de que forma os tradutores em formação buscaram equivalentesem inglês para querecuperassem a idiomaticidade da expressão. Para tanto, consultaram obras de referência, traduções de artigos jornalísticos e corpora de língua geral, além de utilizarem ferramentas de tradução automática. A atividadecom textos autênticos não só possibilitou a identificação de equivalentes tradutórios convencionais da metáfora que exemplificou a tarefa, mas principalmente serviu para indicar aos aprendizes alguns caminhos que levam à autonomia e às escolhas conscientes, imprescindíveis na profissão. ; Driven by cultural, historical, etymological,and other issues, idiomaticity loses its association with its original referents and takes on a new meaning depending on the context. More than a strategy restricted to literature and advertising, idiomaticity is crucial for efficient communication and permeates alltextual genres. Because they make distinct associations, different languages and cultures rarely share similar metaphors. The aim of this article is to describe a task applied to translation undergraduates in the search for English equivalents of fruit metaphors in Brazilian Portuguese. Although botanomorphisms are recurrent in both languages, the association between the fruit and its referent tends to be interlinguistically distinct. Using the metaphor (ser um) laranjaas an example, we describe how the undergraduatessearched for equivalents in English that could render the idiomaticity of the expression. To accomplish the task, they looked up the occurrences of metaphors in reference works, translated news articles and general language corpora, besides using machine translation tools. Not only did thetask enable the retrieval ofconventional equivalents of the metaphor that exemplified the task, but it mainly indicatedthe paths that lead to autonomy and conscious choices, paramount for the profession.
