Abstract:
This preregistration is for the same study registered on February 12th, 2020 (osf.io/3zy6v). We made changes in our data collection procedure and data exclusion criteria (see relevant sections for a detailed description). NOTE (7/26/2021, data collection in progress but not concluded): Due to an oversight, we failed to register an increased number of participants, despite having decreased the number of trials per condition compared to the previous registration. Instead of testing 48 subjects, we test 84 to maintain the level of power. The larger scope of this research program is to marry theories of processing with semantic approaches to counterfactuals. So far, theories of mental models are the main reference for the dual meaning of counterfactuals; however, the dual meaning assumption for counterfactuals makes unclear predictions for incremental counterfactual sentence processing.
