Reading Engagement Through Young Adult Literature In the Junior High Classroom
Winch, Erin. - 2018
Abstract: Motivating students to read print text for sustained periods of time is becoming increasingly difficult in the secondary classroom. Therefore, it is imperative that secondary English language arts teachers find ways to motivate young people to read novels. Research indicates that high interest, high quality literature is crucial to the success of secondary readers. Also, engaged students who are interested and wanting to complete the books that they encounter in school will find success in reading. Incorporating YA literature into the junior high school classroom is an important strategy for teachers to increase relevance as well as personal connection with students. This project outlines teaching practices which support the implementation of YA literature into the junior high school classroom. These guidelines will allow teachers to increase their students’ reading engagement through the use of relevant and contemporary books. ; Graduate
