Abstract:
This report summarizes the research and development work done over four years toward the goal of automatically planning and generating fluent multisentence paragraphs of English text. While ensuring that the grammar is adequate to support the parsing of English text. The work consisted of three principal components, namely text structuring, parsing, and knowledge representation. A theory of texture structure, and an accompanying text planner, were developed and successfully used to generate paragraphs in three different application domains. To ensure bidirectionality, an existing prototype parser was adapted and refined and tested on a functional grammar in to investigate the invertibility of the grammar. Knowledge representation work focused on linking the generator with arbitrary applications by developing a very general underlying taxonomy of conceptual entities which can be linked with various specific domain-related taxonomies.
