Deconstructing the whole
Abstract: Finding a short, cohesive and comprehensive way to explain what Linguistics is it to a person not familiar with the field is not an easy task. What I came up with was of a type of backwards programming. With programming, people create an artificial language which allows them to give commands to computers, which then perform different actions. Linguistics is the research of a formed entity the human language, which we all quickly learn and utilize for a variety of purposes without any problem. However, the ways in which language was constructed and the specifics of how exactly it achieves its required effects, is an open question to some extent. Linguists create different models regarding the characteristics and effects of language (form, meaning, pragmatic effects etc.) and test those on speakers of language. Through different phenomena in different languages, models of language structure and processing, and experimental work we gradually understand what allows us to communicate information, emotions, thoughts and all other data we so easily produce and process. What linguistics basically does, is investigate a beautiful entity (language) and trying to understand what it consists of and how it works.
