Abstract:
Ausgangspunkt dieses Projekts ist die bekannte Beobachtung, dass "thou", eines der beiden Personalpronomen der 2. Person Singular im Englischen, im Lauf des 17. Jahrhunderts zugunsten von "you" aus der Alltags- und Prosasprache verschwindet. Dennoch wird "thou" in der Lyrik noch zwei Jahrhunderte lang prominent weiterverwendet. Dieses Projekt leistet einen ersten Schritt zur bisher noch nicht untersuchten Frage danach, mit welchen Konnotationen die beiden Pronomen nach dem Sprachwandel in der Lyrik verwendet werden. Mit Daten aus einem selbsterstellten Korpus von über 1300 englischsprachigen Sonetten werden Machine Learning Prediction Modelle trainiert und ihre Vorhersagegenauigkeit gemessen. Es zeigt sich, dass "you" und "thou" entgegen anderslautender Behauptungen in zahlreichen Gedichtkommentaren nicht synonym verwendet werden und die Kategorie der Angesprochenen wohl eine wichtige Rolle bei der Wahl des Pronomens spielt.
