Wolof novels : translation and configuration of a literary genre ; Romans (en) wolof : traduction et configuration d'un genre
Chaudemanche, Alice. - : HAL CCSD, 2021

Abstract: Based on a multilingual corpus of novels written in Wolof, self-translations into French, novels written in French, and literary works translated into Wolof, this dissertation questions the role of translation in the development of the novel in Wolof and shows how this genre gets invented at the crossroads of languages. The first part defines the different cultural configurations that have historically shaped the relationship between Wolof literature and the foreign through translation: the shaping of a corpus of ethnotexts in the colonial era (past), the development of an African-speaking “counter-corpus” oriented towards future literature (future), and the assertion of the legitimacy of African languages within the World Library with the Céytu collection launched in 2016 (present). The second part outlines the poetics of the novel in Wolof. It shows that it is conceived as a Bildungsroman which aims to form an enlightened citizen, awake to diversity and open to otherness, including that to be found in his own language. More than a genre, the novel appears as a mode of transmission. The book is only one possible support for the story that needs to be told aloud. The third part of the dissertation explores the translingual poetics of three digraphic novelists who illustrate three different modalities through which translation is integrated into the process of novel creation: Mame Younousse Dieng’s translation-reconciliation, Cheik Aliou Ndao’s invention of a new language-of-translation, and translation as an extension of the fable in Boubacar Boris Diop’s work.
