Abstract:
The platform Reddit provides a space for users to form groups around shared interests, referred to as “subreddits”. Within these subreddits, which can be considered individual “communities of practice” or “virtual communities”, users often develop a topical slang. An example are pet-themed subreddits, which use a register called “doggo lingo” or “pupper talk”. The study focuses on the orthographic, grammatical, and lexical aspect of this variety and addresses the following question: Which factors influence the presence of non-standard orthography in the posts and comments of pet-themed communities on Reddit? This question is answered by using a corpus of 356 posts retrieved from eight subreddits and a sample of 4472 responding comments, which enables a quantitative analysis of the factors influencing spelling choices using multiple regression, in combination with insights gained from a pilot study using discourse-centred online ethnography. Potential predictors influencing the orthography in the posts are the subreddit, the type of the accompanying visual mode and its features. Including the latter acknowledges the multimodal nature of Reddit. Spelling in the comments can be influenced by the orthography in previous comments and the post, besides their position within the comment structure. The results confirm the insights from previous studies emphasising the immediate importance of the formal or direct addressee. The study contributes to the ongoing exploration of language use on Reddit and provides an example of how linguistic creativity and humour are used strategically to create identity in online communities of practice.
