Pseudorelatives: Parsing Preferences and their Natural Concealment
|

|
Abstract:
The present thesis focuses on the claims of the PR-First Hypothesis (Grillo and Costa, 2014) about parsing. The PR-First Hypothesis intended to account for the relative clause attachment asymmetry. Its claim regarding attachment was that pseudorelatives created a methodological confound and, when accounting for pseudorelative availability, the same uniform locality driven parsing preferences should be observed across languages. Chapter 1 will present the relevant concepts of the thesis and establish its goals. In chapter 2, I discuss The PR-First hypothesis, the syntactic status and semantic preferences of pseudorelatives and a novel proposal for the availability of pseudorelatives in European Portuguese where pseudorelatives present a definiteness requirement. Chapter 3 presents an acquisition study in European Portuguese assessing the claim that the parser is uniform and continuous from childhood into adulthood. Results from a picture verification task show that children as early as 3 years of age display sensitivity to the same linguistic cues as adults when deciding attachment. Chapter 4 shows an ERP study in Italian looking at the electrophysiological response of ruling out the pseudorelative interpretation in favour of a relative clause interpretation. The goal was that the type of response to the violation would inform on the underlying principles that drive the pseudorelative preference. Results were inconclusive which created an asymmetry with the previous offline data conducted within the same hypothesis and which supported the PR-First Hypothesis. Chapter 5 presents two acceptability studies in Italian that try to account for the asymmetry in results between online and offline methods. I hypothesise that syntactic adaptation due to the uneven ratio between pseudorelatives and relative clauses can account for the asymmetry. The first acceptability study shows that the 1:3 ratio in favour of Relative clauses triggers an adaptation effect that throughout the experiment dissipates the initial gap in acceptability between pseudorelatives and Relatives. The second acceptability study shows that reducing the uneven ratio from 1:3 to 2:3 offsets the rate of the adaptation effect taking longer for the initial gap in acceptability between pseudorelatives and Relatives to dissipate. Results show that the parser is tracking the conditional probability of syntactic structures and trigger an adaptation effect that hides the parser’s natural preferences. Chapter 6 summarizes each chapter and discusses their conclusions. ; A presente tese estuda as predicões da PR-First Hypothesis (Grillo and Costa, 2014) e o seu contributo para as preferências de parsing. A PR-First Hypothesis pretende oferecer uma explicação para o fenómeno da assimetria entre línguas na preferência de aposição de relativas existente na literatura. A hi afirma que a disponibilidade da estrutura pseudorelativa criou um problema metodológico e que controlando a disponibilidade sintática das pseudorelativas, se observam preferências uniformes de parsing de acordo com princípios de localidade. No capítulo 1 são apresentados os conceitos relevantes para o resto da tese e o seu objetivo. No capítulo 2 discuto as propriedades sintáticas e semânticas das pseudorelativas e uma nova proposta que capta o estatuto que a estrutura tem em Português Europeu on as pseudorelativas apresentam uma restrição de definitude. O capítulo 2 discute também a PR-First Hypothesis e o seu contributo para as teorias de parsing em geral. O capítulo 3 apresenta um estudo de aquisição de linguagem sobre a PR-First Hypothesis em Português Europeu e a visão de continuidade do parser. Recorrendo a uma tarefa de seleção de imagens, apresento dados que demonstram que, a partir dos 3 anos de idade, as crianças e adultos demonstram preferências de parsing guiadas pelas mesmas propriedades. O capítulo 4 discute uma experiência em Italiano recorrendo à técnica de ERP para observar a reação eletrofisiológica da exclusão da estrutura pseudorelativa em prol de uma leitura de oração relativa do mesmo material. O objetivo da experiência era observar os componentes elicitados pela resolução da ambiguidade entre pseudorelativas e orações relativas e os processos subjacentes a essa resolução. Os resultados foram inconclusivos e criaram uma assimetria entre dados de metodologias online e os dados de metodologias offline testando a PR-First Hypothesis. No capítulo 5 são apresentados dois estudos de aceitabilidade em Italiano que tentam explicar o porquê da assimetria entre dados offline e online. Coloco a hipótese de que um processo de aprendizagem despoletado pelo rácio de 1:3 em favor de orações relativas seja a causa da assimetria. O primeiro estudo demonstra que um efeito de aprendizagem ocorre e a inicial diferença em aceitabilidade entre pseudorelativas e orações relativas se esbate durante o decorrer da experiência. O segundo estudo de aceitabilidade pretende demonstrar que o efeito de aprendizagem pode ser contido quando o rácio da distribuição das estruturas se eleva de 1:3 para 2:3. Os resultados demonstram que o parser está a acompanhar a probabilidade distribucional das diferentes estruturas e, que, quando desigual, um efeito de aprendizagem é despoletado que oculta as preferências naturais do parser. O capítulo 6 oferece um resumo e conclusões de cada capítulo e conclusões globais do presente trabalho.
