	Abstract: Ziel der vorliegenden Arbeit ist, die Entwicklung von Mehrsprachigkeit und Dolmetschen in der Diplomatie im Vergleich zum Gebrauch einer Lingua franca zu analysieren, wie das bei der Verbreitung des Englischen als Lingua franca (ELF) der Fall ist. Nachdem die Bedeutung des Französischen als Sprache der Diplomatie in Europa abgenommen hatte und die einzelnen Nationen eine wichtigere Rolle eingenommen hatten, war die Diplomatie des 20. Jahrhunderts nach den Pariser Friedensverhandlungen und der Entstehung der Vereinten Nationen von Mehrsprachigkeit geprägt. Die Verbreitung des Englischen in der Welt der Diplomatie lässt nun die Frage einer Veränderung in der transkulturellen diplomatischen Kommunikation er-neut aufkommen. Bisher wurde in der Fachliteratur großteils nur die Sicht der Dolmetscherinnen und Dolmetscher selbst behandelt, während die vorliegende Arbeit den Blickwinkel der Diploma-tinnen und Diplomaten einnehmen und eine Verbindung zwischen Theorie und Praxis herstel-len soll. Zu diesem Zweck wurden Interviews mit sieben Diplomatinnen und Diplomaten aus fünf verschiedenen Ländern durchgeführt. Sie wurden gebeten, ihre Einschätzung der Ver-dolmetschungen, die sie im Zuge ihrer diplomatischen Laufbahn erlebt hatten, abzugeben und den Einsatz von ELF und anderen Fremdsprachen im diplomatischen Dienst zu beurteilen. Als Ergebnis der Analyse der Interviews ist die Rolle des Englischen als universelle Sprache der Diplomatie weltweit zu bestätigen. Englisch scheint heutzutage eine Voraussetzung für die Arbeit als Diplomatin oder Diplomat zu sein. Dennoch hat das Dolmetschen als Gleichgewicht schaffendes Kommunika-tionsmittel eine bedeutende Rolle inne, vor allem bei offiziellen Stellungnahmen bei Konfe-renzen oder Staatsbesuchen. Die Verwendung von anderen Fremdsprachen als dem Engli-schen erfüllt meist den Zweck, dem Gegenüber Respekt zu erweisen oder als Zuhörerin oder Zuhörer dem Gegenüber das Kommunikationshemmnis der Fremdsprache abzunehmen, indem man dessen Muttersprache verwendet. Die im Rahmen der Forschungsarbeit interviewten Dip-lomatinnen und Diplomaten drückten ihre Wertschätzung für die Arbeit von Dolmetscherin-nen und Dolmetschern aus und sahen in der Diplomatie auch weiterhin ein Einsatzgebiet für den Dolmetschberuf. ; The purpose of this thesis is to analyse the evolution of multilingualism and interpreting in the diplomatic arena, as compared with a lingua franca, specifically, the spreading use of English as a lingua franca (ELF) in diplomacy. After the role of French as the European language of choice in diplomatic circles had declined, and nationalism gained importance, multilingualism in diplomacy rose in the 20th century after the Paris Peace Talks and the inception of the Unit-ed Nations. Currently, due to the firm entrenchment of English in the diplomatic world, the question of a shift in the transcultural diplomatic communication arises again. Most prior research on interpreting in diplomacy focuses on the perspective of the in-terpreters themselves, whereas this research looks at involving the diplomat’s point of view and at establishing a link between the theory and the practice. To this end, interviews with 7 diplomats from 5 different countries were held and they were asked to give evaluations of the interpretations they had experienced in diplomatic discussions, the use of ELF and the use of other foreign languages. As a result, the role of English as the universal language of diplomacy world-wide is to be confirmed. English seems to be a prerequisite for the work as a diplomat in modern times. Never-theless, interpreting and multilingualism continue being of importance in the function of a bal-anced means of communication when it comes to official statements at conferences or state visits. The diplomats interviewed in this research appreciated the work of interpreters and did not see an end of interpreting in diplomacy any time soon.
