Heritage language learning: A needs analysis study on Korean-Australian tertiary students

Abstract: This study aims to identify the needs of Korean heritage language learners in relation to learning (or the prospect of learning) their heritage language and culture. Heritage language (HL) education has recently become an emerging field of inquiry within Australia, however little empirical information is available in relation to Korean heritage students’ needs that identify their language use, attitudes, motivation, and learning preferences such as learning styles and learning areas. To address these issues, the study has conducted online surveys of Korean heritage students enrolled at three Australian universities and analysed data collected from 52 students. The survey consists of questions on (a) language use and maintenance; (b) attitudes and motivation; (c) preferred learning styles; and (d) preferred learning areas. The results of the analysis indicate that Korean heritage students have their own needs, interests and preferences in relation to their heritage language learning. The study describes and explains each of these topical issues, and then offers discussions of practical implications in the provision of adequate courses for heritage students and development of high quality teaching resources.
