Extending the Scope of Inquiry in Interlanguage Pragmatics: The Case of Focus Constructions
In: http://staff-www.uni-marburg.de/~callies/papers/callies.ilp.2007.pdf
Abstract: This paper proposes that the field of inquiry in interlanguage pragmatics (ILP) needs to be extended beyond the cross-cultural investigation of speech acts, and argues that pragmatic knowledge of a foreign/second language (L2) includes more than the sociopragmatic and pragmalinguistic abilities for understanding and performing speech acts. It is suggested to study advanced L2 learners ' comprehension and use of syntactic means of information focusing, known as focus constructions, which are pragmatically-motivated variations of the basic word order. The paper outlines that knowledge of the principles of information organization in discourse, and the use of linguistic devices for information highlighting clearly relate to L2 pragmatic knowledge. Investigating these phenomena in advanced interlanguage may also be a rewarding enterprise with respect to the interrelationship of learners ' grammatical and pragmalinguistic abilities, an important yet unresolved issue in ILP research. Finally, the paper discusses some pedagogical implications for foreign language teaching. 1.
