Programa de Pós-Graduação em Linguística. ; Descrevo e analiso, nesta tese, os padrões empíricos de ordenação de clíticos na escrita catarinense. Os dados analisados são orações finitas não-dependentes com verbos simples e estruturas verbais complexas extraídas de vinte e quatro peças de teatro escritas por brasileiros nascidos no litoral de Santa Catarina, nos séculos 19 e 20. A hipótese que defendo é a de que a escrita catarinense (no cenário da escrita brasileira) reflete um processo de mudança sintática que pode ser interpretado como a competição de diferentes gramáticas, no sentido empregado por Anthony Kroch, em Reflexes of Grammar in Patterns of Language Change (1989). No que se refere às construções em que a variação próclise (clV)/ênclise (Vcl) é atestada em orações finitas não-dependentes, os resultados estatísticos evidenciam um aumento (progressivo) nas taxas de clV em contextos V1 e em contextos X(X)V em que X é antecedido por um sujeito, um advérbio não-modal ou um sintagma preposicional - não-focalizados. Enquanto em textos de autores nascidos no século 20 a próclise em orações com sujeitos pré-verbais é categórica, em textos de autores nascidos no século 19 está correlacionada à natureza dos sujeitos pré-verbais: a próclise nesse contexto é mais recorrente em orações com sujeitos pronominais pessoais, e não o é em orações com sujeitos DPs simples. Referentemente ao padrão de ordenação em complexos verbais, há um aumento (também progressivo) da próclise ao verbo não-finito. Na escrita de autores nascidos no século 19, encontro padrões aparentemente instanciados pela gramática do Português Clássico (PC): construções DPclV e construções XclV com percentagens variáveis e inferiores a 50% e construções com interpolação de "não" e/ou do pronome pessoal "eu". Paradoxalmente, encontro, nesses mesmos textos, padrões instanciados pela gramática do Português Brasileiro (PB) - próclise a V1 e próclise ao verbo não-finito em complexos verbais - e o padrão enclítico instanciado pela gramática do Português Europeu (PE). Com base nos resultados empíricos descritos e analisados, defendo que a ordenação de clíticos na escrita catarinense reflete um caso complexo de competição de três gramáticas do português: PC, PB e PE In this thesis, I describe and analyze the empirical standards of clitic ordering in written texts produced in the state of Santa Catarina, Brazil. The data analyzed are finite, independent clauses, with simple verbs and complex verbal structures, extracted from twenty four plays written by Brazilian playwrights born in the coastal area of Santa Catarina, during the 19th and 20th centuries. My hypothesis is that the clitic ordering of playwrights (within the scene of the Brazilian writing) reflects a process of syntactic change that can be interpreted as the competition of different grammars, in the meaning proposed by Anthony Kroch, in Reflexes of Grammar in Patterns of Language Change (1989). In what concerns the constructions where the variation proclisis (clV)/enclisis (Vcl) occurs in finite, independent clauses, the statistical results reveal a progressive increase in the rates of clV in V1 contexts and in X(X)V contexts where X is preceded by a - non-focused - subject, non-modal adverb or prepositional phrase. Proclisis in clauses with pre-verbal subjects is categorical in texts of authors born in the 20th century. In texts of playwrights born in 19th century, proclisis is correlated to the nature of the pre-verbal subjects: It is more frequent in clauses with personal pronominal subjects, and it is not frequent in clauses with simple DP subjects. Concerning the ordering standard in verbal complexes, there is an (also progressive) increase of proclisis to the non-finite verbs. In the writing of authors born in the 19th century, I found standards apparently instantiated by the grammar of Classic Portuguese (CP): DPclV constructions and XclV constructions in changeable percentages (lower than 50%), and constructions with the interpolation of the adverb "não" and/or the personal pronoun "eu". Paradoxically, I found, in these same texts, standards instantiated by the grammar of Brazilian Portuguese (BP) - proclisis to V1, and proclisis to the non-finite verb in verb complexes - and the enclitic standard instantiated by the grammar of European Portuguese (EP). Based on the empirical results described and analyzed, I affirm that the clitic ordering in the writing of Santa Catarina reflects a complex case of competition of three grammars of Portuguese: CP, BP and EP.
