Abstract:
International audience ; In this article, we come back to the issues raised in M. Biraud's (1999) article on θαυμάζω 'be surprised'. At first glance, this verb accepts much more types of subordinate complement clauses than any other predicate describing a mental state or process. Θαυμάζω behaves as if it were a verb of knowledge, interrogation and emotion at the same time. However, on the basis of the meaning and distribution of εἰ-, exclamative and interrogative clauses, we suggest that these three semantic features do not always have the same importance. Rather, one of them is always salient in the context, so that θαυμάζω means either 'be surprised', 'ask with surprise', or 'notice with surprise', depending on the construction it is involved in. However, there remains an issue. Certain constructions should activate several meanings, considering the constructions of other verb classes (knowledge, e.g. οἶδα; emotion, e.g. χαίρω; interrogation, e.g. ἐρωτάω): exclamatives should activate 'be surprised' and 'notice with surprise'; interrogatives, 'ask' and 'notice'. Thus, it finally appears that θαυμάζω, in two of its meanings, is a kind of defective verb in so far as its variants do not have all the expected constructions (with exclamatives, its 'notice' meaning is activated, but not its 'be surprised' meaning; with interrogatives, its 'ask' meaning is activated, but not its 'notice' meaning). οἶδα), émotion (par ex. χαίρω), interrogation (par ex. Abstract. In this article, we come back to the issues raised in M. Rather, one of them is always salient in the context, so that θαυμάζω (roughly) means either 'be surprised', 'ask with surprise', or 'notice with surprise', depending on the construction it is involved in. However, there remains an issue. Certain constructions should activate several meanings, if we think of the constructions of other verb classes
