Canada's first grand opera L’Intendant Bigot by Joachim Ulric Voyer: A study of symbols and motifs
Adams, Kathleen. - : School of Music, College of Fine and Applied Arts, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, 2022
Abstract: My DMA thesis investigates Joachim Ulric Voyer’s historical opera L’Intendant Bigot, which premiered in Québec in 1929. My project focuses on Voyer’s intent to allocate symbolism to seven principal roles. While there is some background information on this opera, there is no specific research on Voyer’s symbolism concept. The primary focus of my study is to delve into the symbolism and determine Voyer’s results. To achieve this, I researched the background of Intendant Bigot, analyzed the opera’s storyline and the development of its characters, and uncovered the literary symbols in the libretto and the musical motifs in the score. The significance of this data proves that Voyer realized his intentions and provides scholars with added information on this historical opera. ; U of I Only ; School of Music policy
