Not only verbal arguments such as subject (S/A) and object (P), but also possessors in adpossessive constructions may be flagged differentially. The latter type of differential marking is typically called “alienability split”, and it typically depends on the properties of the possessed noun, not on the adpossessor’s properties. Thus, linguists have not seen these two types of differential marking as parallel, and indeed there are many differences. In this talk, however, I will highlight the parallels and ask to what extent differential marking patterns can be explained by a general theory of efficient coding. I will also touch upon differential adpossessor indexing and how it compares to differential object and subject indexing. ...
