- : Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, 2014
... : The present study investigated the effects of multiple foreign languages learning on short-term memory, working memory capacity and on executive function abilities. Two groups of participants, a monolingual group (N = 67) and a polyglot group (N = 65) of adults who had learned several foreign languages, compared on their short-term and working memory capacity and on their executive functions. Specifically, we estimated their verbal and visual working memory, their phonological and visual short-term memory and their inhibition, switching and updating abilities. Results revealed that the two groups differed significantly on all their executive function abilities (inhibition, switching and updating) and on their ability to retain visual and verbal material in their short-term memory, with polyglot group being more advanced. Nevertheless, no significant differences found on working memory capacity. The results suggest that the beneficial effects of foreign language learning might be more evident on executive ...
