Das Ziel der empirischen Untersuchung ist es, aufgrund einer Textanalyse herauszufinden, wie die kroatischen DaF-Schüler die morphosyntaktischen Mittel umsetzen und welche Aneignungsschritte sie dabei durchlaufen. Ein relevanter Punkt in der empirischen Untersuchung war es auch zu zeigen, welche Bereiche schneller und welche langsamer von den Schülern in ihren schriftlichen Produktionen umsetzen. Im darauffolgenden Schritt wurden die Daten der kroatischen Schüler mit den Daten aus dem FISA-Projekt (vgl. Junk-Deppenmeier 2016) verglichen, um Parallelen zwischen Deutsch als Fremdsprache und Deutsch als Zweitsprache zu ziehen. Die empirische Studie war eine Längsschnittstudie, die in den Jahren 2013/2014 an kroatischen Schulen durchgeführt wurde. Die Datenanalyse erfolgte auf der Grundlage von verschiedenen Analyserastern, die dafür erstellt wurden, und der Profilanalyse nach Grießhaber (2010). Die Ergebnisse der Dissertation bestätigen, dass der Zweitspracherwerb in Phasen abläuft (Ludger et al. 2017). Bei den kroatischen DaF-Schülern werden individuelle Unterschiede in der Geschwindigkeit und der Phasenabfolge festgestellt. Dies bestätigt auch die These aus dem DiGS-Projekt (Diehl et al. 2000), dass der Fremdspracherwerb nicht der schulischen Progression entspricht. Es werden Unterschiede und Gemeinsamkeiten zwischen dem Fremdsprach- und Zweitspracherwerb festgestellt. Den Ergebnissen zufolge beherrschen die deutschen DaZ-Schüler die deutsche Sprache besser als die kroatischen DaF-Schüler, durchlaufen aber ähnliche Aneignungsschritte wie die kroatischen DaF-Schüler. Die Dissertation ist sowohl für Studierende im Lehramt Deutsch /Deutsch als Zweitsprache/ Deutsch als Fremdsprache, als auch für Lehrende in diesen Bereichen interessant.
