Theaterpädagogische Methoden im Fremdsprachenunterricht mit besonderer Berücksichtigung des Russischen

Abstract:
; Investigations into the use of drama pedagogy in the foreign language classroom have yielded positive results concerning the effects this teaching and learning approach can have on the development of communicative language abilities. Much research has been dedicated to the incorporation of drama techniques as novel methodological tools in the contemporary foreign language classroom, while Russian foreign language instruction in particular is still associated with a lack of research in the field of drama pedagogy. Hence, the potentials of drama techniques in the Russian foreign language classroom remain unexplored. Therefore, this thesis aims to shed light on the valuable role drama pedagogy can adopt here. The purpose of the first part of this thesis is to offer a theoretical basis of theatre-based pedagogy, evaluating its profound impact on the acquisition of communicative language skills. Moreover, it is argued that the use of drama-oriented activities can provide teachers with different possibilities for adhering to key principles of modern pedagogy as well as to a way of language teaching and learning, which includes the notions of multilingual didactics and differentiated instruction. Furthermore, drama tasks are also viewed from learning theories’ perspectives. In addition, a debate on aesthetic learning experiences, which are gained while performing, is encouraged. The other part of the thesis, giving more practical considerations, examines in what way different types of drama techniques can be actively implemented in the beginner, intermediate and advanced Russian foreign language classroom to enhance the development of both receptive and productive skills as well as lexical and grammar knowledge. A broad variety of drama strategies, including tasks like Hot Seating, Doubling or Sculpting, promote the use of various types of Russian literature or films and can be applied with learners of different levels. The account of drama methods ranges from short improvisation tasks to the stage performance of an entire play. Here, self-developed teaching ideas and screenplays present which established drama techniques, deployed in combination with selected literary works and films, are suitable for different teaching and learning settings in Russian language instruction. Overall, this thesis suggests that drama pedagogy can serve as a valuable teaching and learning methodology for diverse levels of competence in the Russian language classroom, as performing activities can potentially foster the learners’ social, interactional and communicative language abilities while at the same time contemporary views of language acquisition remain considered.
