Abstract:
In prior work, we discovered that adults spontaneously distance their language when regulating their emotions (Nook, Schleider, & Somerville, 2017). In effect, adults use fewer first-person singular pronouns (e.g., "I", "me", "mine") and present-tense verbs when engaging in cognitive reappraisal, and people who more strongly distance their language more successfully regulated their emotions.
