Abstract:
International audience ; We provide a functional analysis of the unconventional sortal classifier system of theMandarin dialect (Sinitic) of Baoding (Hebei) in Northern China. Asian languages andespecially the Sinitic languages are commonly associated with classifier systems andgenerally viewed as their prototypical exemplar. Yet, the dialect of Baoding only hasone general classifier. After providing a detailed description of the classifier system inBaoding, we compare Standard Mandarin and Baoding with regard to the functions ofthe classifiers, and demonstrate that while sortal classifiers in Standard Mandarinfulfill the canonical lexical and discourse functions attributed to classifiers, the lack ofspecific sortal classifiers in Baoding interferes with these functions. Finally, wepropose speculations as for how the expected lexical and discourse functions ofclassifiers are realized in the dialect of Baoding via other linguistic structures.
