Abstract:
Previous studies carried out under this project aimed to explore the effects that labels can have on object encoding and subsequent recognition. Despite previous literature suggesting that labels can have a facilitative effect on object recognition, none of the results from our previous studies have reproduced this finding. Our previous studies found no increased accuracy on an object recognition task when objects were presented with word labels compared to non-linguistic labels e.g. tones. We have hypothesised that this was due to the increased processing load associated with a spoken word. Words may only facilitate recognition when presented slightly prior to the object, so the word can be processed and act as a cue for subsequent encoding and recognition of the object. In this current study, participants will complete the same task as previous studies except we will manipulate the timings of the audio stimulus and object onset, so that they are presented asynchronously, with the word label onset preceding ...
