Abstract:
International audience ; The human brain is remarkably capable to suppress, switch, and focus on between different auditory streams. However, directing attention to target sounds despite prominent distracting sounds is challenging. The bottleneck and shared resources theories assume that attentional resources are limited in capacity. In this regard, one of the important issues is how to identify whether a listener is paying attention to the target sounds or not. In this study, to mimic a learning context, thirteen five-minute lectures in three types of environmental noise including multi-talker, highway, and fluctuating traffic background sounds were presented to N=23 participants, while 64-channels electroencephalography (EEG) signals were recorded. They were instructed to focus on the lectures, as they had to complete an exam afterward for assessing the performance of remembering vocal information. For reference, two other listening tasks including attentive and inattentive listening to background sounds without any lecture were separately performed. We aimed to identify the functional significance of EEG markers and their link to exam scores of remembering vocal information. Four hypotheses on the cortical processing including alpha-as-inhibition, excitation-inhibition balance, speech envelope following, and semantic processing were investigated. In addition to spectral features estimation of EEG signals in different frequency bands, static and dynamic properties of alpha oscillations were assessed by alpha peak frequency and long-range temporal correlations, respectively. Principal component analysis (PCA) was then applied to the EEG-feature matrix to identify the orthogonal combinations that explain best the variance due to listening conditions and backgrounds. We revealed that not only do several EEG-PCA scores correlate with the exam scores of remembering information, but they can also predict the scores better than just knowing the background noise type. Furthermore, our findings suggest that the EEG-PCA scores contribute to statistical significance in the comparison between the three listening tasks and the three background noises.
