Abstract:
There are three generic plural forms in French that can be used to describe groups of people of mixed sexes: the masculine, double-gender, and inclusive plurals. In addition to its generic meaning, the masculine plural form also has a specific meaning, in which it refers to a group exclusively consisting of men. Compared to the other two linguistic forms, masculine plurals thus provide ambiguous information in terms of the gender of the referents. (By contrast, the feminine plural gender only has the specific meaning: it always refers to groups exclusively consisting of women.) Our previous experiment found that people perceived higher percentages of women members in a group when the group was presented in double-gender and inclusive forms compared to masculine forms. This influence of linguistic form was found for social groups (represented by professions) about which people have a gender-neutral stereotype (equal proportions of men and women).
