Abstract: "Ontluikende geletterheid" verwys na die ontwikkelende vaardighede, kennis, en houdings wat konvensionele skryftaalvaardighede vooraf gaan (Whitehurst en Lonigan 1998:848), waar skryftaal beskou word as die taal wat tydens skryf sowel as lees gebruik word (ASHA 2001:1). Verskeie navorsers (Hargrave en Sénéchal 2000:76; Pebly en Koppenhaver 2001:223; Roth en Baden 2001:163; Whitehurst en Lonigan 1998:854) beskou ontluikende geletterheid nie as 'n eenvormige konstruk nie, maar eerder as een wat onder andere konseptuele kennis van geletterdheid, fonologiese bewustheid en ander metalinguistiese vaardighede, grafeemkennis, en begrip van narratiewe insluit. Ontluikende geletterheidsvaardighede begin reeds in die vroeë kinderjare ontwikkel wanneer jong kinders betekenisvolle en volgehoue interaksies, wat om gedrukte materiaal sentreer, met geletterdes het (Bus en Van Ijzendoorn 1997:47; Kamhi en Catts 1991:27; Sénéchal, LeFevre, Smith-Chant, en Colton 2001:440). Volgens Snow (1983:209) moet daar onderskei word tussen taalvaardighede, wat spontaan deur kinders van alle kulture verwerf word, sonder instruksie en ongeag van kognitiewe, psigo-sosiale en omgewingsveranderlikes (Kamhi en Catts 1991:24), en geletterdheidsvaardighede, wat as 'n sekondêre stel vaardighede beskou kan word en wat spesifieke instruksie vereis en nie in alle omgewings en kulture voorkom nie, ten spyte daarvan dat alle kinders, insluitende dié met ontwikkelingsagterstande en ernstige kommunikasie-afwykings (Ericson 2000:195; Pebly en Koppenhaver 2001:221), van baie vroeg af gereed is om deel te neem aan die tipe aktiwiteite wat ontluikende geletterheid sal bevorder.
