Storia e futuro della lingua danese fra nazionalismo e scandinavismo nei primi studi di N.M. Petersen

Abstract:
This article is devoted to two early studies by the Danish linguist N.M. Petersen: Undersøgelse om, hvorvidt den danske Retskrivning bör forbedres (Investigation on how far the Danish orthography should be improved, 1826) and Det danske, norske og svenske Sprogs Historie under deres Udvikling af Stamsproget (History of the Danish, Norwegian and Swedish Languages during their development from their parent language, 1829-30). The main purpose of the analysis is to observe how two dominant ideologies in early 19th-century Scandinavian linguistics, i.e. Nationalism and Scandinavianism, influence Petersen’s discourse. Despite their thematic and methodological differences, the two works show similar characteristics in this respect, revealing the author’s efforts to reconcile and combine these two attitudes. Nationalism is reflected in criticism of the German influence both in crucial moments of language history and in specific orthographic uses. Conversely, the common Scandinavian cultural heritage is emphasized as the safest ground on which to found the future of the Danish language in a wider Nordic context.
