Interkulturelle Kommunikationstrainings in der Entwicklungszusammenarbeit und linguistische Alternativen

Abstract:
Diese Studie geht von der Hypothese aus, dass für die Vorbereitungsprogramme für ausreisende ProjektmitarbeiterInnen, die zukünftig in der Entwicklungszusammenarbeit tätig sein werden, empirisch abgesicherte diskursanalytische interkulturelle Kommunikationstrainings eine Bereicherung wären. Deshalb wird die gegenwärtige Praxis von sogenannten „Interkulturellen Kommunikationstrainings“ in einer österreichischen Entwicklungsorganisation dokumentiert. Zuvor werden die wissenschaftlichen Grundlagen dieser Arbeit aus der Angewandten Linguistik und der Entwicklungsforschung festgehalten und der „Kultur“-Begriff diskutiert. Im Anschluss daran folgen linguistische Betrachtungen zum Bereich „Interkulturelle Kommunikation“ sowie ein Kapitel über Interkulturelle Personalentwicklung sowohl in Unternehmen als auch in Entwicklungszusammenarbeitsdurchführungsorganisationen. Nach dem Prinzip der Triangulierung wurde bei der Forschungsarbeit in der Organisation vorgegangen. In Interviews wurden die Trainerinnen gebeten, über ihre Ansätze und Methode zu sprechen, und die Abläufe der beiden beobachteten Trainings, die im Rahmen des Vorbereitungsprogrammes für ausreisende ProjektmitarbeiterInnen stattfanden, wurden in Protokollen dokumentiert. Sie werden außerdem durch eine breit angelegte historische und kritische Kontextualisierung in ihrem Umfeld der Entwicklungszusammenarbeit lokalisiert und anschließend von einer linguistischen Perspektive aus evaluiert. Konkret handelt es sich bei den beobachteten Schulungen um zwei Trainings, die auf die Sensibilisierung der zukünftigen ProjektmitarbeiterInnen abzielen, und in denen keine sprachwissenschaftlichen Erkenntnisse eingesetzt werden. Im letzten Abschnitt werden die Grundlagen der Gesprächsforschung, die Problempotentiale von Gesprächen und die Vermittlung von interkultureller Gesprächskompetenz diskutiert sowie drei linguistische Trainingskonzepte präsentiert. Es wird überprüft, ob diese die in den aktuellen Trainings festgestellten Mängel beheben können. Als Ergebnis der Studie wird festgehalten, dass die Durchführung von diskursanalytischen interkulturellen Kommunikationstrainings in Entwicklungsorganisationen schwierig, aber effektiv wäre. ; This study starts from the notion that empirically founded discourse-analytical intercultural communication trainings would improve the quality of preperation seminars targetting future development aid project staff. Therefore, the current praxis of what is today called „Intercultural Communication Training“ in an Austrian development organization is examined. Beforehand, the author introduces the fundamentals of Applied Linguistics and Development Studies, which are crucial for this study and offers a discussion of the concept of “culture”. In the following section the concept of “intercultural communication” is questioned as well. In order to complete a differentiated view on the field of reserarch, intercultural personnel development in the business world and in the development aid business is also included in this study. This research project, conducted in an Austrian development aid organisation, was conducted following the principles of triangulation. The trainers were asked to speak about their understanding of “intercultural communication” and their methods to improve the trainees' sensitivity for other cultures. This study then produced detailed protocols of what actually happened in their trainings, which were part of the preparatory course in that Austrian development organization. Furthermore, through a broad historical and critical analysis, the two monitored examples are placed within the context of the current discourse on development aid. After the evaluation of the trainings from a linguistic point of view, the main part of this study presents the basic principles of communication, the potential problems in conversation (not necessarily caused by culture), and discusses the training of intercultural communication skills with linguistic methods, focussing on the requirements for linguistic intercultural communication and the qualification of the trainers. In addition, three different linguistic training concepts, which could be conducted in an development organization, are presented. Further, it is examined, whether these discourse-analytical intercultural communication trainings could mitigate the deficiencies of the current training praxis. The study reaches the conclusion that the execution of discourse-analytical intercultural communication trainings in development aid organisations would be difficult, but effective.
