Abstract:
International audience ; This presentation aims at introducing a model of metalinguistic representation framed by the French linguist A. Culioli in his “Theory of Enunciative Operations”, inspired by topology and called the “notional domain”. The idea is that lexical notions are defined by bundles of physical and cultural properties organized in a domain which can, topologically speaking, be divided into several zones: the Interior is oriented towards the centre, which represents the notion’s typical properties; the Boundary is scalar and gradually oriented towards the Exterior, which draws the line between a low degree and a total lack of conformity to the type. It is exemplified in an analysis of an extract from "The Caretaker "by H. Pinter, in which the protagonists discuss what a typical pair of sandals is (or should be), according to the metalinguistic geography that is at work (often unconsciously) when they speak.
