The Lexical Category of Adjective : Challenging the Traditional Notion
Abstract: Adjectives have always been considered the major lexical category that describes nouns and that it is gradable. However, many scholars claim that these characteristics are neither exclusive nor universal. In this paper, the traditional notion of adjectives is challenged, alongside their universality and independence as a lexical category. Firstly, an account of the main semantic and syntactic properties of adjectives is provided. Secondly, adjectives are analyzed from a nanosyntactic perspective, focusing on adjectives as projections of Place and Path and discussing the properties of deverbal adjectives. Finally, an account of languages that do are considered not to have adjectives is provided.
