Law of three consonants in French phonology ...
Storme, Benjamin. - : Open Science Framework, 2021
Abstract: Grammont’s Law of Three Consonants (LTC) states that French schwa is obligatorily pronounced in any CC_C sequence to avoid three-consonant clusters. Although schwa presence has been shown to be sensitive not only to cluster size but also to the nature of consonants in post-lexical phonology, the LTC is still generally considered as accurate to describe schwa-zero alternations in lexical phonology (i.e. in monomorphemic words and in derived words). This project uses judgment data from French speakers to compare the behavior of schwa in derived words (lexical phonology) and inflected words (post-lexical phonology). More specifically, the study will test whether the nature of consonants in CC_C clusters is relevant only in inflected words or plays a role in both derived and inflected words. A number of variables that have been shown to play a role in schwa-zero alternations will be controlled for in the analysis (word length, word identity, word frequency, and speaker). The statistical analysis of the results ...
