Formulaic Expressions for Foreign Language Learning and Teaching
In: ISSN: 1615-3014 ; Linguistik Online ; https://hal.archives-ouvertes.fr/hal-03562566 ; Linguistik Online, Bern Open Publishing, 2022, Vermischtes/Miscellaneous, 113 (1), pp.91-110 ; https://bop.unibe.ch/linguistik-online (2022)
Abstract: International audience ; Foreign language teaching experts unanimously insist on the necessity of acquiring formulaicexpressions in order to communicate successfully in the target language. However, many of thetreatises in favour of phraseme use, including semantically non-compositional idiomatic expressions,by foreign language learners seem to be marked by an insufficient depth of reflectionas to applied linguistic, methodological, and phraseodidactic1 criteria. The present contributiontherefore aims at a differentiated treatment of prefabricated communicative constructions, startingout from an extended definition and classification and by discussing the pros and cons ofphraseme acquisition. These considerations will lead to the delimitation of formulaic languagefundamental for an operative foreign language competence (routine formulae, collocations and“constructions”) as opposed to those types of phrasemes which are not essential or even inappropriatefor non-native speakers.
