Abstract: Se concibe la variación como un cambio en la forma de las unidades que no afecta al significado. El cambio da lugar a variantes de una unidad que, por no modificar el significado, constituye una invariante de contenido. En el trabajo, 1) se analiza la variación en las locuciones del español; 2) se presentan distintos tipos de variación formal: ortográfica, fonética, morfológica, léxica y combinatoria; 3) se diferencia la variación no marcada de la marcada diacrónicamente por el uso no actual o actual de una unidad; diatópicamente en relación con las zonas en las que se habla español, diastráticamente de acuerdo con las características sociales de los hablantes; y diafásicamente según la situación comunicativa y el registro de lengua; 4) se excluye de la variación la polisemia, la sinonimia, la antonimia, la desautomatización y el error; y 5) se incide, en la necesidad de trabajar la variación en ELE mediante el uso de diccionarios.
