Abstract:
In print and online journalism, the listicle (a blend of list and article) engages and informs its readers by describing a subject in numbered and often ascending subheadings. In prepandemic pedagogy, the University of Toronto’s Professor Carol Percy sometimes solicited student-authored listicles as an occasional variation of final assessment. During the 2020–2021 academic year, the COVID-19 pandemic necessarily brought instruction and assessment online at the University of Toronto. In a course on the history of the English language, Percy challenged her undergraduates to summarize the subject in 13 points, as their take-home final test. Vikram Nijhawan set himself, and spectacularly met, the challenge of using animal names to chart the development of English from its prehistory in Proto-Indo-European to its presence on the internet. We hope you enjoy the resulting intersection of creativity and rigour!
