Abstract: This study investigates whether children’s attitudes towards other children with different accents can be influenced by recent exposure to cartoon characters—either good or evil—with different accents. While children tend to prefer other children who speak with the locally dominant accent over children with other accents, we are interested in whether this preference changes based on recent exposure to positive or negative cartoon characters exhibiting the non-local accent. For example, will children respond more favorably to another child with a non-native accent if they’ve recently watched cartoon clips with heroic, non-native characters compared to when they’ve seen evil, non-native characters? ...
