Abstract:
Based on the theory and methodology of geolinguistics, the dissertation analyses the regressive vowel assimilation in terms of statics and dynamics in the northern Samogitian Telšiai, Kretinga and southern Samogitian Varniai and assesses the intensity of the realization of this feature. For the first time, the change in the distinctive dialectal feature – regressive vowel assimilation – of northern Samogitian Telšiai and Kretinga was investigated, as well as the influence of possible secondary factors. Dialectometry methods were used to analyse the dialect material (to calculate and visualize the data in pseudomaps), and statistical methods were used to calculate the realization of regressive vowel assimilation. The analysis was based not only on dialectal data, but also on the linguistic environment. The dissertation concludes that regressive vowel assimilation cannot be considered as highly systematic, but that there are processes of change, which may be reducing the significance of assimilation as a distinctive feature of the adverbs of the northern Samogitians of Telšiai and Kretinga. In the future, regressive vowel assimilation should become a characteristic rather than a distinctive feature of the regiolectal structure as a result of the ongoing processes of convergence and levelling of linguistic variants.
